I’ll be there for You

I’m sure we all remember the hit 90’s TV show ‘Friends’. It was a show about a humorous gang of buddies and the various dramatic encounters that they experienced throughout their lives which brought them closer together as a group and more so as a family. If you’re one of the few who hasn’t watched the show, you really should. It is genuinely good. Like seriously, what are you still doing here? Go and get watching then come back and keep reading this.

They Need No Introduction

This show has had a major impact on my life. I remember watching this sitcom as a kid and hoping that at some point in my life I would have a group of friends half as tight as those guys were. As it so happens I have been fortunate enough to have various characters come into my life that I am honored to call my friends and others…not so much.

I have made many different friends at different parts of my life, some that stayed for many years and some for less than that, but one thing that they all have in common is that they have all impacted my life in one way or another. I feel that the friends you make are one of the most important aspects of your life that lead you to be the person you are today.

Ever since I was little my mother always told me to make friends that I could learn from. I think she meant that in the academic sense but what I came to realise is that you can learn something from anyone no matter who they are, where they came from or what their level of education is. We all have something to add to the melting pot of life. I have had the pleasure of going abroad to study and this is where I met the most intriguing lot of people, each different from the other, unintentionally molding me into the person that sits here today writing this post. By them, I have been thought to be brave, compassionate, understanding and accepting, as well as a host of other attributes that I can safely credit the company I’ve kept for. During my adventures with various friends, I have learned my strong points and my weak points as well as how to deal with them to make me a well-rounded person.

One of the main things that venturing out into the world has thought me was that some friends may not always have a positive influence on you. There are some people that will come into your life and intentionally or unintentionally leave you with a sour taste in your mouth. Sometimes it can be really difficult to realise this for yourself because in your eyes they are your friends after all. However, just because you may have had some good times with them, doesn’t mean that they haven’t in some way had a negative effect on you. What can be even more difficult is cutting this person out of your life, but trust me, from my experience once it’s done you will feel so much better. You may feel sad thinking back about the good times but the time has passed and you are on your way to being a better you.

The most important thing I have learned about friendship is that it isn’t about having good friends, but rather about being a good friend. Treat those people in your life in the best way possible. Be there for your friends as you would like them to be there for you. Remember, how you treat your friends says a lot about you as a person, so go out there and be the best you can be for those you care about. And when it comes to those that don’t reciprocate, well those are exactly the kind of people that don’t deserve to be in your life.

I urge you to go out there and befriend people that are different from yourself, those friendships will teach you more than you can ever learn from any conventional source. An important piece of advice that I can give you is that although friends are important, we should never live our lives for our friends. Instead, live your life for yourself but let your mates come along for the journey.

I want to take a moment to shout out to my homies, you guys have always been there for me through thick and thin, you guys have had my back through the messiest of situations and never faltered in the face of difficulty. Thank you for making my ‘Friends’ dream come true in a greater way than I ever thought possible.

Till next time…

Be wild, weird and wonderful.
